Week 2: Philippines Plate Tectonics
Week 2 is about the different plate boundaries and how close our countries are to them . Plate tectonics are the reason why the several most devastating natural hazards occur. The three different kind of boundaries are divergent, transform, and convergent. Divergent is where the plates move away from each other, transform is when they move past each other, and convergent is when they move toward one another. Earthquakes and volcanoes happen at divergent, earthquakes happen at transform, and subduction zones along with volcanoes, earthquakes, and landslides happen at convergent boundaries.
The Philippine sea plate is unusual, because almost all the boundaries are convergent. The Pacific plate is subducting beneath the Philippine Sea plate to the east while the northwestern part of the Philippine Sea plate is subducting beneath the Eurasian plate. There are also transform boundaries near the Taiwan and Philippine trench. The Philippines is prone to a lot of natural disasters such as deadly typhoons, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and other natural disasters. This is due to its location along the Ring of Fire, or typhoon belt – a large Pacific Ocean region where many of Earth’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.

Hi Aaron,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job explaining plate tectonics! For my blog, I choose the country of Peru. Although our countries are on the opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean, they have a lot of similarities. Peru sits on the west boundary of the South American Plate right next to the Nazca Plate. That boundary is convergent causing the Peru-Chile Trench. Peru is also in the Ring of Fire. Therefore, our countries experience a lot of the same natural hazards.
Great research. Thank for the map, as it explains nicely what you posted. Yes, this plate is complex for sure...it'll be interesting to see the relationship between these locations and main quakes next week...
ReplyDeleteGreat post. The image explains clearly what you are talking about how the Philippine Sea Plate is going under the Eurasian Plate. Nicaragua shares some of the typical natural Hazards.
ReplyDeleteHey Aaron!
ReplyDeleteYou did a very good job. I liked the way you explained what the plate boundaries are, and the main reasons why The Philillipines suffers a lot.
I am working with Indonesia, and our countries face similar hazards due to it is also a country included in the Ring of Fire.
I hope you continue doing well.
